The Development Office for the Division of Humanities partners with faculty, alumni and friends of the Humanities to foster philanthrophy and to promote awareness of the achievements of the Humanities faculty, departments and students.

The Humanities are the foundation of a useful education. Focusing on cultural and intellectual traditions throughout the world, UCSC's Division of the Humanities prepares students for a wide variety of careers by providing them with the knowledge and the skills of critical thinking, communication, and expression that enable them to participate in society as informed and engaged citizens. Internationally recognized scholars teach undergraduate and graduate students and advance their fields with innovative research, publications, and creative activity that both preserve our traditions and map new fields of study.

Humanities Endowments

Writing teacher establishes endowed student prize

Upon his retirement, writing instructor Don Rothman, along with family and friends, created the Don Rothman Endowed Award in First-Year Writing. The endowment, established in honor of Don’s longtime teaching career at UCSC and his commitment to excellence in writing, will provide an annual writing award for a paper produced in a first-year writing class. The award recipient will also have the opportunity to honor his/her most influential teacher.
