TOMOL

An On-Line Archive of Digital Images of Rock Art from the Western United States

TOMOL is an on-line archive of digital images of rock art located in the Western United States. The archive takes its name from the Chumash word "Tomol" which referred to their large wooden plank canoes. The archive's name is a metapor for travel and exchange. By making digital images available over the web the archive makes accessible rock art imagery of the Western United States to a large and dispersed audience.

The purpose of the TOMOL archive is to make digital images of rock art in the Western United States easily accessable via the web. The goal of the archive is to promote instruction and research in rock art. The images in the archive are made available under the conventions of "fair use." I ask those who use the images to abide by copyright restrictions and to respect the cultural significance of the imagry. Appropriate attribution of images in publications or on other web sites is appreciated.

The TOMOL archive actively solicits contributions of photographs and digital images related to rock art in the Western United States. Individuals interested in contributing images or photographs to the TOMOL archive should contact one of the curators (see below).

The digital images in the TOMOL archive are made available in JEPG format. Image sizes in TOMOL are restricted to between 100k to 500k. The size restriction on images in the archive allows for faster download times while preserving acceptable levels of image sharpness and contrast. Given the limited size of the images they are not suitable for making quality prints, however they should be sufficient for meeting most research and instructional needs.

While the TOMOL archive is not in the business of selling I am usually willing to entertain such requests. The final cost is negotiable and usually dependent upon size and quality. Please contact me to discuss obtaining a print of an image contained in the TOMOL archive.

The TOMOL archive is divided into five sections.

The TOMOL archive and web site is hosted by the University of California, Santa Cruz. The site remains a work in progress. Comments or questions regarding the TOMOL archive should be directed to the curators.
