"A Touch More Rare" Harry Berger Jr.

Santa Cruz County Stories: Forever Young: For Harry Berger, Jr., the open dialogue of minds is the surest route to eternal youth

By Chris Watson, Santa Cruz Sentinel

If you didn't know Harry, you'd be forgiven for interpreting his loose, casual clothes and tousled head of hair as the outward evidence of a Santa Cruz gentleman of leisure.

At 85, Harry Berger Jr. -- founding faculty head of the UC Santa Cruz English Department -- isn't content to view life's final chapter from an easy chair, feet up, boring people with tales of bygone days.

Quite to the contrary, he is at work on three books and has another one waiting for final touches before being published. And although he's been officially retired from UCSC since 1994, the professor emeritus teaches occasional seminars and has an upcoming schedule of lectures, panels and international convocations that would exhaust most men half his age.
