The American Historical Association promotes historical work and the importance of historical thinking in public life. Position Description: 

The American Historical Association seeks undergraduate and graduate students to work remotely or in-person as interns in summer 2024. AHA interns work on a variety of projects and gain insight into historical and nonprofit work. Students will be matched with an AHA staff member who will mentor and oversee their work. They will have an opportunity to attend departmental and general staff meetings and to learn about the day-to-day work of the world's largest professional association of historians.

Accepted interns will need to receive either a stipend or course credit from their home institutions; if you do apply and are selected for an interview, please email UCSC Humanities Experiential Learning Coordinator Kylie Rachwalski (hum-experiential-learning@ucsc.edu) to discuss compensation.

AHA interns’ work may include the following:

  • Assistance with the website redesign project; may include review of our website's educational and professional resources as well as training in WordPress.
  • Working in an Airtable database used by the AHA for our popular Career Contacts program. Knowledge of Airtable is helpful but not required. Training will be provided.
  • Collaborating on website and social media strategy and marketing work. Research projects including on past locations of our annual meetings to determine segregation laws and data on funding for graduate students.
  • Review of state history/social studies standards and model K–12 curricula.
  • Distilling the AHA's journal and magazine articles for use by high school students.
  • Assistance with processing AHA archival materials.

Internship Term: Summer 2024. AHA will work with selected interns to set the start and end dates. 

Hours: Working hours are negotiable and are to be set with AHA Supervisor. AHA Interns have worked anywhere from 10-30 hours/week. Daily hours are flexible as this internship may be remote across time zones. 

Compensation: $18-$20/hour depending on experience 

Location: Remote

Reports to: AHA Staff
