Gabriel MindelUCSC 2023-2024 Chancellor's Dissertation Year Fellowship Gabriel Saloman Mindel is an interdisciplinary artist, musician, and scholar whose research focuses on the relationship between noise, protest, and power. His writing has appeared in both scholarly and para-academic publications, including Resonance: A Journal of Sound and Culture, Foundry, RadioDoc Review, Sounding Out!, Folklife Magazine and The Journal of Aesthetics & Protest. For over two decades he has performed and recorded experimental music under his own name and in collaborations, including with Anna Friz and the group Yellow Swans, among others. He is currently working on a multi-year curatorial project titled "Landscape & Life" that investigates how contemporary artists reckon with the entangled legacies of landscape art and settler colonialism. Mindel received an MFA from Simon Fraser University School for the Contemporary Arts and is completing a PhD in the History of Consciousness Department at the University of California Santa Cruz. His dissertation project, On Tumult: A Political Theory of Noise, argues for noise’s potential and threat to radically transform, evade, and abolish structures of political power that constrain people’s everyday cultural, political, and social lives. He will be joining the Minneapolis College of Art and Design as a Visiting MFA Faculty member in the Fall of 2024. |
