Deans' & Chancellor's Awards 2023-2024
The Deans’ and Chancellor’s Awards encourage and stimulate outstanding scholarship and creativity among undergraduate students, based on work developed in courses or programs in the normal pattern of 2022-2023 academic activity at UC Santa Cruz.
Ten undergraduate projects from the Humanities Division received a Deans’ Award, and three of those projects were also selected for Chancellor's awards. Congratulations to our awardees and their projects!

Jacob Press
History, minor in History of Art & Visual Culture
""You Just Take It For Granted When You're Growing Up": Filipino Cockfighting in the Pajaro Valley"
Jacob Press is from Redwood City, California, and loves to go on hikes with friends in the area. His curiosity for history led him to become an intensive history major with a concentration in the Americas and Africa and was a minor in history of arts and visual culture. While he was at UCSC, he also got a Jewish Studies Research award for his paper about Jews in Colonial Jamaica and New York. Starting in the fall of 2023, he received the THI undergraduate public fellowship for 2023-2024 to be a curatorial research assistant for Watsonville is in the Heart. He was able to get this position because of his use of the Redwood City Public Library Archive to research and create a curriculum about the Japanese-American floral industry in Redwood City. Jacob created a digital timeline for the Sowing Seeds exhibition. He has also worked on the WIITH digital archives and created a digital exhibition about Filipino cockfighting in Watsonville and the Greater Pajaro Valley.

Bronwyn Elisabeth Eyre
History
"Silent Soldiers: Uncovering the Stories of Indigenous Nurses in the First World War"
Hello! My name is Bronwyn (she/they), and I'm a third-year history and spanish studies double-major. My region of concentration is Africa and the Americas, so I'm particularly interested in indigenous history. I believe in the importance of deconstructing colonial narratives of the past to better reckon with present injustices--especially as we see the continued imposition of colonial violence and cultural erasure in practice to this day. Outside of school I love reading and long walks (both preferably outside on sunny days). I also play for the UCSC women's soccer team and would consider myself an amateur kite flyer who's just trying their best.

History
"A Night in Harlem: Mapping the Nightclubs of 1930's Harlem"
Jackson Young
I am a History and History of Art and Visual Cultures major here at USCS. I very much enjoy ancient history and spend lots of my time researching the Bronze Age in the Eastern Mediterranean. I also dabble in archaeology and am currently assisting in research at archaeological sites in Benin. I am working on thebronzeagearchive.com which is an interactive mapping project which highlights important archaeological sites in the Bronze Age Eastern Mediterranean Sea. I hope to continue my scholarly pursuits and work in archaeological sites in this region.
Valerie Sainz
I am a third year student currently majoring in History of the Americas & Africa. My interests lie in the study of political events in Mexican history, primarily focusing on the Cristero War of 1926. The study of history has been a lifelong passion of mine and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to further my studies with incredible and inspiring professors. In the future, I hope to pursue a career within the museum field and continue my research on the Mexican collective memory of the Cristero War.
Isabel De Blois
Isabel de Blois has always harbored a love for ancient history, which, over the past few years, she has nurtured and subsequently cultivated into a passion for ancient Egyptian history. Viewing history not as a sequence of events but rather as a lens through which to examine social and cultural phenomena, Isabel is particularly drawn to exploring the experiences of women in historical contexts. While her immediate plans entail remaining in California for the next few years, Isabel hopes of one day returning to Egypt to further immerse herself in it's history.
