The Humanities Division and The Humanities Institute are excited to announce an experiential learning opportunity for undergraduates at UC Santa Cruz to work with Your Future Is Our Business (YFIOB)..

The Humanities Experiential Career Exploration and Learning (EXCEL) Program connects Humanities majors and minors to organizations in the community for paid internships. In this cohort program, EXCEL Fellows gain practical experience and professional training while learning about positions outside of the university that build on their studies in the humanities. At the same time, community partner organizations benefit from students’ assistance and academic expertise. EXCEL Fellowships carry on the success of THI’s Public Fellows program, and they foster positive collaborations between the campus and community, demonstrating the value of a Humanities degree for a range of careers.

Your Future is Our Business provides work-based learning opportunities like expos, panels, guest speakers, and more to elementary, middle, and high school students and internships for post-secondary students. Students get to explore various career options and interact with professionals currently working in the industry. We provide real-world exposure and connect youth to adults who can assist youth with finding their path.


Position Description: Program Coordinator

The Program Coordinator intern focuses on coordinating and planning career speakers, career panels, expos, luncheons, and partnership events. The luncheon is scheduled for March 21, 2024, and this position must attend.

The intern will work directly with the Executive Director weekly to discuss projects, coordinate events, and develop timelines that meet the organizational partners' needs.

The intern will use platforms such as Google Suite, CANVA, Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin to promote events and to reach out to possible volunteers in the community.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Event Planning & Coordination (70%): coordinating and planning career speakers, career panels, expos, luncheons, and partnership events.
  • Promotion (5%): Draft and design promotional content (i.e, fliers, images) on CANVA and at time create campaigns around events.
  • Social Media Management (10%): Create and post materials on YFIOB Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn pages, as well as update YFIOB website and other platforms.
  • Community Engagement and Networking (10%): Reach out to possible volunteers in the community. Attend community events.
  • Administrative Duties (5%): As assigned

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • You are a declared major or minor in a department in the Humanities Division and are in good academic standing. If you are currently proposed, you can declare by the end of the academic year in June. [eligibility requirement]
  • You have work authorization. [required]
  • Must be comfortable working with adults and students ages 10-18
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Comfortable working on multiple tasks and projects at once
  • Able to work remotely, unsupervised
  • Comfortable with public speaking and networking, meeting new people
  • Be able to attend all YFIOB team meetings (works with your class schedule)
  • Proactively handle challenges, troubleshoot problems, and ask for assistance when needed
  • Availability to schedule and work flexible hours, sometimes including weekend and evening hours.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse ethnic, cultural, religious, socio-economic, political, and sexual orientations.
  • Proficient in using MS Office Suite (Word, Powerpoint, Excel) and Google Apps (Drive, Sheets, Calendar, etc.)
  • Proficiency with the most popular social media platforms and doing online research
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle to assist with transporting tabling supplies to and from events. UCSC Humanities funds a ZipCar account to help with transportation.
  • Covid Vaccinations up to date
