Faculty-Led Undergraduate Research Opportunity: Discourse-Based Project, Spring 2024

The Humanities Division is excited to announce an experiential learning opportunity for Humanities undergraduates at UC Santa Cruz to work with Language and Applied Linguistics Professor Saori Hoshi . 

Undergraduate research connects Humanities majors and minors to faculty-led research projects in the Division and it provides a valuable opportunity for students to apply their knowledge and develop skills to make an impactful intellectual or creative contribution to their field. Students gain practical experience and professional training that builds on their studies in the Humanities. At the same time, faculty benefit from students’ assistance and academic expertise. 

Job Title: Undergraduate Research Assistant

Internship Term: Winter and Spring Quarters 2024, January – June 2024. 

Application Deadline: March 3, 2024

Time Commitment: 15 hours/week 

Paid: $20/hour 

# Positions Available: 1

Location: Hybrid - in person meetings with some remote work 

Reports to: Professor Saori Hoshi 


Project Overview:   This project is text-based research where students will learn how to conduct discourse-based research that involves quantitative and qualitative analysis of linguistic data sets.

Job Duties  

  • Quantitative analysis [100%] - work on basic statistical analysis that generates important findings of the study.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • You are a declared major or minor in a department in the Humanities Division, and you are in good academic standing. [required]
  • You have intermediate-advanced Japanese language skills [required]
  • You are familiar with basic statistical approaches for linguistic analysis such an ANCOVA, zero-inflated Poisson regression model, etc. [required]

Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities  

  • This opportunity is a great fit for Linguistics or Languages & Applied Linguistics majors/minors who would be interested in developing your research skills including data collection and diverse analytical methods in linguistics.
