Humanities Faculty and Staff

Example of Recent Open Call

Summer 2024 Institute: Community-Engaged Learning (Sept 10-12): The Humanities Division seeks applications from all active, senate faculty and continuing lecturers with appointments in the Division to participate in the first Summer Institute on Community-Engaged Learning. Community-engaged learning enables students to apply what they learn in the classroom to a real-world community challenge by integrating academic coursework with public service. During the institute, faculty may begin the development of a new course or refine an existing course to center the practice of community-engaged learning. This institute is designed by the Teaching and Learning Center at UC Santa Cruz in partnership with the Humanities Division. This call is on InfoReady, and it is open through July 30, 2024

  1. Dates of the Institute: September 10-12, 2024 two full days (Tue/Wed) and one half day (Th)

  2. Overall Goals of this Institute:

    • Learn about different dimensions and approaches to community-engaged learning.

    • Develop an understanding of how to integrate community-engaged learning into existing and new courses.

    • Collaborate in cross-disciplinary teams of faculty to discuss course design choices and priorities when integrating community-engaged learning in new and existing courses.

    • Establish community-engaged learning as an option for courses in the Humanities Division

Study Immersion Course Development: The Humanities Division seeks applications for faculty to develop “study immersion” courses, or adapt existing courses to include an experiential international or domestic travel component. This call for applications is open to all active Senate faculty with appointments in the Humanities Division and will fund course-development, which includes a proposed itinerary for the immersion experience.

We are defining study immersion as a culminating, faculty-led travel experience for undergraduates, which directly follows a related course. The travel experience is meant to provide deep and intensive engagement with the course’s themes and learning outcomes for a limited number of students after the course has ended. In study immersion, students step out of the traditional classroom setting and into real-world environments where they can apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations. This call is on InfoReady, and it is open through July 30, 2024.

Undergraduate Research (November 2023): The Division of Humanities Student Achievement Team seeks applications to fund humanities-centered undergraduate research opportunities for humanities majors and minors, to be offered at any point during the Academic Years 2023-25, including Summer Sessions. This initial call for application is open to all active Senate faculty with appointments in the Humanities Division and will fund undergraduate students to work on faculty-led projects. The submission form will be open through 12/8/2023.

If a call is not currently open, please share your experiential learning idea using this form.
