Call for Applications: Humanities EXCEL Fellowship with The Hive Poetry Collective–Communications & Events Intern 2025-2026

The Humanities Experiential Career Exploration and Learning (EXCEL) Program connects undergraduate Humanities majors and minors with community partners for paid internships. Fellows gain valuable professional experience while exploring potential career paths.
Internship Details

Location: Communications to be done remotely. Events will be on-site, typically at Bookshop Santa Cruz on Pacific Avenue in Downtown Santa Cruz—flexible schedule except for event support.
Duration: Academic Year 2025–26
Hours: 10–20 hours/week
Pay: $20/hour
Mentorship: Regular check-ins and support from Hive Poetry Collective’s Intern Liaison Julia Chiapella
What You’ll Do – Communications & Events Intern
Under the guidance of the Hive Poetry Collective’s Intern Liaison, the Hive intern will assist with various tasks to support Hive’s programming for the weekly poetry podcast and the bi-monthly live poetry events in Santa Cruz. Meeting at least four times per quarter with the liaison. These tasks involve The Hive’s website, Hive Live! events, promotional materials, and social media updates.
- Communications (75%):
- Updating web page (hivepoetry.org) as onal materials as needed for various media outlets.
- Increasing and maintaining The Hive’s social media presence (especially on Instagram and Facebook)
- Events (25%):
- Attending Hive Live! events (second Tuesday, every other month, 7 p.m.)
- Setting up Bookshop readings for Hive Live! events (and at any other locations)
- striking Bookshop Hive Live! events
- Humanities EXCEL Programming:
- Attend two cohort meetings each quarter when possible and participate in asynchronous Canvas experiential learning reflection.
Eligibility & Qualifications
- You must be a declared or proposed major or minor in a Humanities Division department and have good academic standing. If proposed, declare by June.
- Eligible majors: Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism, Classical Studies, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Feminist Studies, History, Jewish Studies, Language Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy, Spanish Studies
- Eligible minors: Black Studies, Classical Studies, East Asian Studies, History of Consciousness, History, Italian Studies, Jewish Studies, Language Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Middle Eastern and North African Studies, Philosophy, Spanish Studies
- You have work authorization (required)
- You can work independently and collaboratively (required)
- You can communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- You can synthesize information and ask for clarification
- You are comfortable engaging with the public
- You know WordPress, Canva, and social media platforms (or you learn quickly)
- You can move mobile bookshelves and set up chairs and tables for reading.
