Humanities EXCEL Program

Humanities EXCEL Fellows hold paid internship positions with off-campus community partner organizations and work with mentors to develop transferable skills and understand that professional field. This cohort program aims to increase career-mindedness and support EXCEL Fellows to reflect on how their position builds on their studies in the humanities. Fellows earn $20/hour and work 10-20 hours/week throughout the academic year. Transfer students are encouraged to participate, as this program offers an excellent opportunity to bridge their prior experiences with new academic and professional connections at UCSC, helping them to quickly integrate into the campus community while building a strong foundation for their future careers. The EXCEL Program builds off of the success of The Humanities Institute’s Public Fellows Program.

EXCEL Program Goals:

  1. EXCEL Fellows will practice reflecting on the humanistic lens and expertise they bring to their work that impacts the Santa Cruz County community and beyond.
  2. EXCEL Fellows will nurture transferable career-ready skills that prepare them to be socially-just leaders in professional and community-engaged settings.

Student Learning Outcomes:

  1. You will be able to articulate the relevance of your humanities degree in professional contexts or applications.
  2. You will identify two career-ready skills to focus on over the course of your internship. You will be able to  self-assess your abilities within these two skills.
  3. You will be able to produce an effective resume and cover letter that capture your fellowship experience.
