Call for Applications: Humanities EXCEL Fellowship with Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County–Marketing & Development Assistant 2025-2026

The Humanities Experiential Career Exploration and Learning (EXCEL) Program connects undergraduate Humanities majors and minors with community partners for paid internships. Fellows gain valuable professional experience while exploring potential career paths.
Internship Details
Partner Organization: Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County
Location: This position is in person, located at 800 Ohlone Pkwy, Watsonville, CA 95076. There may be a possibility for this to transition to a hybrid setup. There may be a possibility to occasional remote work.
- UCSC Humanities funds a ZipCar account so students can book vehicles to travel to work or required events in Santa Cruz County if needed.
Duration: Academic Year 2025–26
Hours: 10-15 hours/week
Pay: $20/hour
Mentorship: Regular check-ins and support from the Senior Director of Communications and Marketing Dawn Barreras
What You’ll Do – Marketing & Development Assistant
- Social Media Management (40%): Create engaging short-form video content for platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn to boost our online presence. Develop social media campaigns for fundraising events and food distributions. Monitor channels and engage with our audience while staying updated on trends.
- Video Production & Photography (20%): Support the creation of video content showcasing our programs and community impact. Participate in brainstorming sessions for video concepts and edit using preferred software.
- Event Support (20%): Assist with logistics for fundraising and community events. Help with marketing strategies to enhance attendance and capture photos/videos during events for marketing use.
- General Marketing Duties (20%): Handle clerical tasks related to marketing, assist in creating printed materials like flyers and brochures, conduct market research, and collaborate with the team on marketing efforts.
- Humanities EXCEL Programming: Attend two cohort meetings each quarter and engage in asynchronous Canvas reflection.
- Other duties as needed to support the Development and Marketing teams.
Eligibility & Qualifications
- You must be a declared or proposed major or minor in a Humanities Division department and have good academic standing. If proposed, declare by June.
- Eligible majors: Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism, Classical Studies, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Feminist Studies, History, Jewish Studies, Language Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy, Spanish Studies
- Eligible minors: Black Studies, Classical Studies, East Asian Studies, History of Consciousness, History, Italian Studies, Jewish Studies, Language Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Middle Eastern and North African Studies, Philosophy, Spanish Studies
- You have work authorization (required)
- You can work independently and collaboratively (required)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic video editing skills and experience with video production equipment/software (such as Final Cut Pro) [required]
- Adobe Premier Pro experience is a bonus
- Highly organized with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Passionate about social justice, food security, and positively impacting the community.
- Bonus: Bilingual English/ Spanish, basic understanding of photography
