The Humanities Experiential Career Exploration and Learning (EXCEL) Program connects undergraduate Humanities majors and minors with community partners for paid internships. Fellows gain valuable professional experience while exploring potential career paths.

Location: Hybrid – You must have a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle to transport event supplies. UCSC Humanities provides a ZipCar account for transportation.
Duration: Academic Year 2025–26
Hours: 15 hours/week working with your class schedule
Pay: $20/hour
Mentorship: Regular check-ins and support from a designated supervisor, Executive Director Deborah Lindsay
What You’ll Do – Program Coordinator
The Program Coordinator intern will plan and coordinate events like career speakers, panels, expos, luncheons, and partnerships. The Program Coordinator intern will plan events like career speakers, panels, expos, luncheons, and partnerships, including a luncheon in the spring (attendance required).
- Event Planning & Coordination (65%): coordinating and planning career speakers, career panels, expos, luncheons, and partnership events.
- Promotion (5%): Draft and design promotional content (i.e., fliers, images) on CANVA and, at times, create campaigns around events.
- Social Media Management (10%): Create and post materials on YFIOB's Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn pages, as well as update the YFIOB website and other platforms.
- Community Engagement and Networking (10%): Reach out to possible volunteers in the community. Attend community events.
- Administrative Duties (5%): As assigned
- Humanities EXCEL Programming (5%): Attend two cohort meetings each quarter when possible and participate in asynchronous Canvas experiential learning reflection.
Eligibility & Qualifications
- You must be a declared or proposed major or minor in a Humanities Division department and have good academic standing. If proposed, declare by June.
- Eligible majors: Applied Linguistics and Multilingualism, Classical Studies, Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Feminist Studies, History, Jewish Studies, Language Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Philosophy, Spanish Studies
- Eligible minors: Black Studies, Classical Studies, East Asian Studies, History of Consciousness, History, Italian Studies, Jewish Studies, Language Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Middle Eastern and North African Studies, Philosophy, Spanish Studies
- You have work authorization (required)
- You can work independently and collaboratively (required)
- You should be comfortable working with adults and students aged 10-18.
- You need strong written and spoken communication skills.
- You should be able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- You can work remotely without supervision.
- You are comfortable with public speaking and meeting new people.
- You must attend all YFIOB team meetings, considering your class schedule.
- You should proactively handle challenges, solve problems, and ask for help when needed.
- You must be available for flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
- You should be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds, including different ethnicities, cultures, religions, socio-economic statuses, political beliefs, and sexual orientations.
- You must be skilled in using MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and Google Apps (Drive, Sheets, Calendar).
- You should know how to use popular social media platforms and research online.
- Your COVID vaccinations must be up to date.
